Beginner Photography: Getting To Grips With The Exposure Triangle

A common misconception is that the magic of a well captured shot is the result of some magic which occurs within the body of the camera. However the real magic component is light. It is possible to poorly capture a well lit subject, but a poorly lit subject will always be lacking when it comes to the final image. I am a real Newbie to all this and I have struggled for a while now to master the 'exposure triangle' while using my first DSLR camera. It's an ongoing battle and it definitely takes time getting used to the measurements and the way in which the varying factors interact to produce an image.

There are all kinds of courses devoted to this subject so consider this as a brief overview and introduction to the concept of capturing light well.

When you take a photograph, the camera's shutter opens up and begins to allow light to pass through the lens. It is this light which then hits the camera sensor which is then processed as the image. There are three factors which affect how the light is captured and therefore what the final image will look like.

Aperture: This refers to how big the lens opening is and it is measured in f-stops (f/2, f/5, f/11 etc). The smaller the number is, means the wider the aperture and when the aperture is wider it allows more light to pass through. Aperture size can also affect the depth of field of an image, which is a great tool for many reasons such as blurring the background for a portrait for instance.

Shutter Speed: This refers to the length of time that the shutter is left open, it is measured in seconds (1/200 of a second, 1/60, 5 seconds and so on). The slower the shutter speed, the longer it remains open thus allowing for more light to come in. Shutter speeds also affects the level of sensitivity to motion. Meaning that while faster shutter speeds can freeze motion, using a slower shutter speed can help to produce motion blur, which can be a useful technique also. Sometimes the photographer wishes to portray the motion or movement of the subject to varying degrees. You can find some useful tips on shutter speed here.

ISO: This refers to the level of sensitivity of the sensor to light and it is measured in ISO units (100 ISO, 400 ISO, 6400 ISO and so forth. The higher the ISO the more flexibility you have in being able to take photographs in darker coditions. However, there is a cost and is noise or the graininess of an image. This is why photos taken in darker conditions can often exhibit such characteristics, check here for more information on how to master ISO.

November Goals

It's almost weekend. This is just going to be one of those rambling catch up posts as I've had no time to prepare what I'd had in mind.

I've recently set myself a short term goals list to see if I can actually achieve any. On this said list are things such as - Go running twice a week. Read *force myself to exercise more! I've got terribly lazy about keeping fit and I blame learning to drive. As fabulous as it is to leap into the car and go, my figure is not thanking me for it. At all.
Which brings me to my second goal - Try to eat more healthily. I'm going to look into some Slimming World recipes as I've seen amazing results from my SW friends!
Thirdly, I'm going to try to take LOADS of blog photos between now and Christmas. As I type this, my new iPhone is currently making it's way across the UK. It's due to arrive tomorrow and I'm hugely excited. I've gone for an upgrade with EE and I've chosen the Rose Gold iPhone SE. I'm really hoping that having a better quality phone will mean better blog photos so I can up my game. Watch this space...
My fourth goal is going to be more of a hurdle. I really want to overcome some of my social anxiety and get out and about a bit more. Hek maybe I might even get REALLY brave and go on a date! Time will tell. My brother got tickets for us to see the musical 9-5 tomorrow evening. I'm a huge Dolly Parton fan (as is he) and I believe she even wrote the music and lyrics so it should be an excellent show. He's also persuaded me to go into the city afterwards for a few drinks. Needless to say, I'm both excited and anxious about the evening but I'll report back in the future with how my anxiety levels coped. Sometimes I guess you have to step out of your comfort zone right?

Have any of you set yourself short term goals lately? Let me know in the comments! Until next time...

Books

lachatte_rouge

Calling all bookworms, booknerds and bookdragons! You're going to love this post! Firstly I should say happy Wednesday. Two more get ups until weekend! As you may have guessed, this week the spotlight is on...

#Books

When I initially set out doing these 'Instagram Favourites' posts I expected to stick at them for only a week or two. Now they've become one of my favourite posts to put together. Of course it helps that I've had some lovely feedback from GGD readers. Glad I'm keeping you lovelies happy!
I got a little over excited for this particular hashtag. I wanted to feature every single book that I came across but that would have been near impossible. I hope I've picked a good mix for my final selection. There are several on here I've read and several still on my 'TBR' list. I do love a good recommendation so feel free to stop by and share your favourite reads!

As usual, the Instagram handles are listed below the images. I say this EVERY week and feel like a broken record... :) But please do check out each IG account for more gorgeous photos and indeed more book recommendations.

Enjoy the rest of your week!

lindaboranga

Hello and happy Wednesday to all of you! I hope the week is treating you kindly.
This particular post was LOTS of fun as the chosen hashtag of the week was #Bloggers! I could have featured hundreds of photos but you would have been scrolling all day, so obviously I had to narrow it down to these...

As usual, the Instagram handles are featured below each image. Be sure to check them out for more fabulous photos!

_season_blog_

Last week I shared my first ever 'Instagram Favourites' post with you all. So now we're onto week two and the lovely Marie chose this weeks hashtag which is...

#Pumpkin!

All the photos featured had the hashtag #Pumpkin on Instagram. There were SO many to choose from but eventually I whittled it down to this small collection... Hope you like them!

Below each image is the Instagram handle from which I borrowed each photo. Be sure to check them out for more colourful and inspirational photos.
