How to Prepare Your Body for Pregnancy*

*This is a collaborative post*

Whether you plan to conceive a child naturally or through fertility treatments, either now on in the future, you should do everything you can to prepare your body and improve your chances of having a healthy baby. Start with a visit to your GP for a full check-up and some advice on things like your diet and lifestyle. It will also give you an opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

Consider your weight. Being overweight or underweight can affect your chances of conceiving. Excessive exercise and dieting, for instance, can stop your period and make it impossible for you to have a baby. Fatty foods can lead to high blood pressure, diabetes, and other problems, which can make conception difficult. With that said, try and keep your exercise to a moderate level, like a short walk each date, and eat a healthy, balanced diet. Aim for a BMI of anything between 18.5 and 24.9.

Smoking and drinking are also no-no’s when it comes to getting pregnant, for both the man and woman. If you smoke while pregnant, your unborn child may end up facing fertility issues of their own when they grow up. Don’t be afraid to ask for help with quitting smoking. Your GP may also advise you to stop taking certain medication, as it could cause complications with your fertility.

During your visit to the GP, they will be able to talk to you about your sexual health. If you have had chlamydia in the past, for example, it may have caused damage to your fallopian tubes, preventing a fertilised egg from travelling to your womb. It’s important that you’re aware of all of these kinds of complications when it comes to your body and ability to conceive, so that you know what to do to make it more possible.
