Understanding the agenda of the meeting before you go and thinking of how you can contribute

Prior to attending a business meeting, you need to be sure you’re clear on what exactly the meeting will involve. Write down everything that might be discussed and any points you want to talk about. This way when you get in there, you’ll have a bit of a direction to follow and will ensure you don’t miss out on anything important. Whether you're a school looking at how to harness AI to reduce workload such as with an AI-assisted marking tool, or if you're a marketing firm looking for ideas, clarity is key.

Anticipate any challenges or questions that might arise

There are bound to be a host of questions, queries or scenarios that arise in the meeting you need to be prepared to answer. If you’re trying to win a client over, the last thing you want is to look unprepared and as though you don’t know what you’re talking about. By having any potential questions already thought of and answered in your head, as well as answers already formulated, you’ll show you know what you’re talking about. It will also help you to not get flustered, seem more poised and get across any information you might need to.

Give yourself plenty of time to get there

If your meeting is somewhere outside of your work place, you want to allow plenty of time to get there. Nothing looks worse that being unprepared and not giving yourself enough time and turning up late. Give yourself time for transport delays, traffic and just things generically going wrong as always seems to happen when you have something important to get to! Try and arrange a meeting point that’s not too far or where you know the route so you can avoid any potential troubles - such as getting lost - from arising before hand.

These are just a few things you can do to help you prepare for a business meeting. Whether you’re heading to one as part of a business trip, or just on a Monday morning, the more you’re prepared, the better it’s likely to be.
