Are We Addicted To Our Screentime?*

*This is a collaborative post*

It's hard to go anywhere these days and not find people glued to their mobile phones. Whether it be at the pub, in the doctors waiting room, in the supermarket or on the bus, everywhere you go you'll see people constantly using their phones. It's a bad habit we've got into and I'm just as guilty of it too. Whether it be checking texts and Facebook notifications or applying for blog opportunites, I seem to spend an inordinate amount of time staring at my phone.

It doesn't help that we live in a digitally prominent era. Let's face it, everything seems to have now gone digital so we're sort of encouraged to use our phones and computers more than ever. Nowadays I can't even ring my GP for a repeat prescription, instead I have to log on an app and request it that way. There literally seems to be an app for every circumstance. Ironically there's now even apps for monitoring how much we use our phones! (The irony being we probably end up using our phones even more just to keep tabs on the results.)

Is it telling that many employers actually ban the use of mobiles during working hours? Are they that much of a distraction that we can't even have them on our persons? Are we - dare I say - addicted to our screentime?

Of course we can't knock the situation completely as on the plus side, mobile phones along with computers, can be great. Mobiles on their most basic level keep us in touch with each other. Computers aid us in the workplace, in school, at college, at university and even at home. I certainly couldn't blog without a laptop! It's more about finding a healthy balance, too much of a good thing isn't always a positive.

Too much screentime - be it on our phones or computers - can actually have a negative impact on our lives and relationships. It can affect our sleeping habits, our concentration and even our health. It can also take its toll on our eyes. Being a blogger means I stare at both my mobile and computer screen for prolonged periods of time. I've lost count of the amount of days when I've gone to bed with irritated eyes.

Although I could tell you to cutback, the majority of us probably won't reduce our screentime. On a positive however, you'll be glad to hear that there are products available which can at least help with one particular problem - Tired and sore eyes.
Vizulize provide eye drops for a wide range of problems such as allergies and dry eyes. If you visit their website you can read up on various eye conditions including eye strain, tired eyes, eye infections, dull eyes, eye allergies and hay fever.
They're actually currently running a campaign looking at people's phone habits to see not only how much time we spend on our phones but which apps we use most and if our screentime is causing harm to our eyes. I certainly know that the more I use both my phone and laptop, the more my eyes start to hurt, but then I do use them both excessively.

How about you? Do you spend hours staring at your mobile phone or computer? You can check out the campaign hashtag (#ScreentimeStats) via social media to read what's new and leave your own comments.
